Open Climate Fix Receives ‘Outstanding’ Top 10 Rating for UNESCO A.I. Award
OCF honoured to be selected as one of the Top 10 projects using AI to address the UN Sustainable Development Goals in 2023
LONDON, MIDDX, UNITED KINGDOM, May 3, 2023/EINPresswire.com/ — Non profit AI software company Open Climate Fix (OCF) has received an ‘outstanding’ rating in the prestigious International Research Centre on Artificial Intelligence (IRCAI) 2023 awards list. The UNESCO affiliated awards highlight the best projects from around the world using AI to tackle the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
OCF has spent the past three years developing a world class solar forecasting service, which uses advanced machine learning to provide rapid and accurate data on local solar energy generation. The information is then used to help balance electricity grids, significantly reduce carbon emissions and cut energy production costs. The live forecasting service, which has received funding from Google and Ofgem’s Network Innovation Allowance, has been running successfully in a pilot scheme with the UK’s National Grid Electricity System Operator and other organisations over the past year. A roll out to international users is expected within the next few months.

The world stands at the threshold of a new age of renewable energy generation, but one of the major challenges is how to handle the transition without breaking the system. Renewable sources such as solar and wind provide cheap clean energy, but tend to be unpredictable to use. Sudden weather changes such as clouds or gusty winds can make it extremely difficult to integrate these energy inputs into a grid while maintaining stability. This risks breaking equipment or causing blackouts.
By making use of OCF’s sophisticated forecasting techniques and technologies, grid operators, energy generation companies and smart home operators can predict with more certainty how renewables will act, and plan accordingly. Accurate and timely forecasts can reduce the need to keep spinning reserve generators running at peak emissions, and help the operators plan for their needs more efficiently.

Having access to an improved embedded solar forecast will help control room engineers reduce balancing costs and emissions.”
A key part of the OCF solution is the project’s open source roots. The company’s AI data models are being released to the world free of charge, which will allow international developers to deploy their own solutions quicker and more easily. By using a transparent open source model, OCF will rapidly scale up their cutting edge solutions to help meet the urgent global need to transition from fossil fuel to renewable energy production.
