Cyber Security News

Why track cyber security news? Cyber security is a world unto itself. It’s a profession, an IT discipline and now a major industry. Companies, consumers and governments are spending billions of dollars a year on cyber security. Security also pervades many areas of life that have little to do, seemingly, with cyberspace. Thus, to keep up with the world in general, it’s helpful to stay aware of news that relates to cyber security.

For example, the dispute between the US government and Huawei is at once about international trade, national security, telecom industry competition… and cybersecurity. Security is a root issue with Huawei, given the suspicions about the company’s connections to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). However, the company’s size, reach and technological innovation push the matter to the forefront of US-China relations.

cyber security newsOr, take consumer cyber risks. We cover cyber security news that deals with consumers’ exposure to cybercrime and fraud. Consumers are increasingly at risk for identity theft, credit card and other malfeasance at the hands of cyber criminals. The articles we curate on this subject come from law enforcement publications, mainstream media and specialized blogs.

Public policy is now being influenced (or should be) by cyber security news. Policy makers should be aware of how cyber security affect their jobs and constituents’ lives. For instance, the “smart city” is both an innovation and a threat. Using IoT sensors and advanced data analytics to improve municipal services is a great idea. However, the smart city also exposes government data to breach.

This is particularly urgent given the relatively insecure technologies (e.g. Chinese-made sensors) used for the smart city and the wireless connectivity that make it all possible. Add malicious nation-state actors to the mix, such as the ones currently paralyzing American cities with ransomware, and one can see the potential danger.

CIA ‘Leaker’ Josh Schulte Posted Agency Code Online—And CIA Never Noticed

He’s been fingered as the man who gave away some of the CIA’s most important secrets. And for years, he was practically hiding in plain sight.

Joshua Adam Schulte, the former CIA worker suspected of passing the agency’s hacking secrets to Wikileaks, previously posted the source code for an internal CIA tool to his account on the public code-sharing site GitHub, the Daily Beast has learned. Read More…

Dataguise Certified on MapR Converged Data Platform 6.0

The DgSecure platform from Dataguise, a provider of  data-centric audit and protection (DCAP), has been certified with version 6.0 of the MapR Converged Data Platform. DgSecure is a data-centric audit & protection platform that delivers simple, powerful software for sensitive data governance. The MapR Platform simultaneously runs analytics and applications with speed, scale and reliability, enabling companies to achieve greater value from data through DataOps.

Dataguise software integrates with MapR through APIs to provide data-centric security – including sensitive data detection, protection (encryption or masking), monitoring, and auditing – for the data stored in MapR data lake repositories.

Product certification is part of the MapR Converge Partners Program and makes it easy for customers to identify partner products certified to work with MapR. Customers can use these products and solutions to lower project risks and realize cost savings over custom built solutions. With hundreds of members worldwide, the MapR Converge Partners Program includes best-of-breed partners with the shared commitment to bring the best expertise and business solution for each unique customer need.

“Dataguise and MapR are a powerful combination to deliver the data governance, security and performance required for mission-critical applications,” said Geneva Lake, VP worldwide alliances and channels, MapR Technologies. “Our joint customers will benefit from the Dataguise data-centric audit and protection capabilities while processing next gen applications on the MapR Converged Data Platform.”

The MapR Converged Data Platform converges all data into a data fabric that can store, manage, process, apply and analyze as data happens. With MapR, companies benefit from a powerful modern data system, where volumes of data from files, tables and streams are ingested once and accessible as a single source from on premises data centers, across clouds and to the remote edge.

DgSecure helps organizations meet existing compliance mandates and prepare for new regulations, such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) going into effect later this month. Dataguise is the only vendor in its category to provide end-to-end sensitive data security, compliance, and governance to help address the data privacy requirements of the GDPR. The powerful software detects, protects, audits, and monitors sensitive data in real time across enterprise data repositories, both on premises and in the cloud—all from a single platform.

With a policy-driven approach, DgSecure identifies and protects sensitive information with consistent procedures across data stores for total security and compliance of data at the source, in flight, and at rest. The solution is ideal for organizations seeking to access sensitive information for business analytics or other purposes as it provides the flexibility to have centralized policy control and/or decentralized control with broad policy guidance from a single interface. Administrators have the option of anonymizing data through masking or using encryption as required across any data repository on premises, in the cloud, and within hybrid environments.

“We are pleased with the certification of DgSecure on MapR’s Converged Data Platform, and the opportunity to work with organizations who need to access sensitive information for business analytics or other purposes,” said JT Sison, VP, Business Development & Marketing, Dataguise. “MapR Platform users can now simultaneously run analytics and applications with speed, scale and reliability, with the assurance that their data is protected and compliance requirements are met.”

MapR Technologies, a pioneer in delivering one platform for all data across every cloud, enables companies to harness the power of all of their data with the MapR Converged Data Platform. With the MapR Platform, companies can do analytics and applications together as data happens to create intelligent, next-generation applications to outperform the competition. Global 2000 enterprises are using the MapR Platform to help them solve their most complex data challenges. Amazon, Cisco, Google, Microsoft, SAP and other leading businesses are all part of the MapR ecosystem.
